Two Shows to See on Broadway
by Katie Blaine
In April, I was lucky enough to go see two amazing shows on Broadway that I can’t stop raving about. Theater tickets can be super expensive and usually not in my budget, but if you’re itching for some theatrics I suggest seeing End of the Rainbow and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Tracie Bennett plays Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow and she is nothing short of spectacular. The show is described as a “play that happens to have music”… not as a musical. There are no big dance numbers, the cast is very small, and the scene changes are minimal. But Bennett’s vocals will blow you away; she puts every ounce of her tiny body into giving an ovation worthy performance every night.
Obviously the story of Jesus Christ Superstar is nothing new… heck, it is actually over 2,000 years old. But this revival is completely worthy of all the great press it has been getting. It’s like going to a Rock concert– minus the moshing and you get your own red velvet upholstered seat. Okay, so it’s not really like going to a Rock concert, but the music is awesome. Jesus and Judas could have totally made a headlining band.
I’m not going to lie to you- when it comes to Broadway I’m pretty easily pleased. I’m always amazed by the pure talent that actors share with us night after night, day in and day out. These shows don’t have your typical happy-go-lucky show tunes, but they are incredibly entertaining and very moving.
If it is in your budget, I suggest splurging for a ticket. Students should take advantage of student discount options and you could always wait in line at tkts for day-of tickets. If you don’t mind playing your night by ear, you can always show up at the box office right before the show starts to see of there are any extras left you can get for cheaper than face value.
I hope you love them as much as I did. I’m also hoping I can save up to go to a few more this summer. Any suggestions?
